Two Anonymous Essays
During the long months of lockdown we invited all the Samos community to join in a Essay Writing Competition. The topic of the 2 pages essay was an open question:
What do you want the world to know about refugees?
Participants could answer this question with complete freedom: they could talk about the conditions in the camp, their perspective on the situation, their daily routine, important stories they wanted to share, their wishes and hopes for the future.
We received 11 entries, all of them were praiseworthy and valuable. They have been evaluated by our language teachers based on creativity of content, vocabulary usage, orthography and argumentative structure.
Here are two essays wrote by two camp residents who have decided to remain anonymous. We respect their choice, and we were given permission to publish their work without mentioning their names.
So here they are. We invite everyone to take the time and read their testimonies with care.
Thinking of a special day ahead of time, I'm considerate enough to make sure life will be a better place. I wish the United Nations would make a decision about this. I'm so conscious about that, but hence the humanities class suffering from this, they wouldn't take life into consideration.
Particularly at this time of living, migrating from place to place. Go through the reference of slavery and discover what is in that. I retrieve my knowledge and experience, put in place and describe this as a modern slavery.
I'm calling on all unions and top standard organizations to look at us.
Particularly in the twenty-first century, the humanities class have been abused.
No, humans have been absolutely abused, tortured morally, physically.
They haven't yet been provided with medical assistance, no access to this right. The living conditions are poor. The easiest way to this is the sustainable home but how can we get this? Refugees need help from the government and its citizens.
I have yet to find a crisis worse than the crisis between the citizens and the migrants. It is the worst I have seen.
We have been described as animals, which hold nothing in my mind run against that. Even if I have, I will not be supported because everyone else is holding up his or her secret, because everyone is afraid of what will happen.
Risking your life to cross this water, crossing from the fence…
Don't believe refugees are stupid, no. You need to know what they've lived through. Maybe they have been segregated, tortured, abused in all kinds of ways, some have been accountable for things they have not done.
Sometimes I take a moment and look at myself in the mirror to know whether I'm garbage or not.
Brothers and sisters, distinguish ladies and gentlemen, we have formed ourselves where we can't control it. The situation is targeting and tarnishing our repetition daily. My concern is that I'm in defense of humanity's highest class ever made by God. Why should we treat each other like this as humans?
I have seen no interest in equal treatment because even their domestic animals are not treated like that. I raise up my voice and I say no to injustice. The pending life has no trust in anyone, it's so short. I'm so imprudent of the slavery, doing the days of our forefathers or great grandmothers, whose lives were like a dark cloud which continue up to today's date.
Trust me, a day will come when you will see no one called refugees or migrants floating towards the European Union states. That day, everyone will stay where they are, and the arrow will turn back on them. They will also receive groups of humans like those today. Life is not equal.
My friends, humans, greetings to you all distinguished ladies and gentlemen.
In connotation with the main principal they should be judged accordingly. There is a saying that says 'look at it for you will see it clearly only by looking into it'. The slavery infinitely continues. Basic needs should be provided. Respect should be a place where it belongs to, nothing will separate human from human. I call upon the entire world to look at victims from another part of the world who have been abused, strangers, from danger to danger.
All in one, refugees' lives matter.
Hello world,
Here dwells the dreams of people whom no one cares about.
To be accurate, here on the island of Samos, I know where to start and I have something going on in my head and we are treated with this racist tendency.
The refugee’s sin is that his life is defined by his geographical patch, you do not specify the colour of your skin. Nor your nationality, so we are described as intruders and unwanted ones here.
Children do not use the term heima, when they want to say that they are going to their tents that do not protect them from the cold of winter or from the hot waves of summer, they say that they are going home... The house is so sad. The child dreams of home and of going to school.
In the rest of this earthly region, rights are considered rights, not dreams...
Dear world, living here is difficult. Very difficult.
And despite all this, when you wake up in the morning, you see faces contemplating something new, that may change the course of their lives, such as a short message that says: “Your asylum application has been accepted...”
After waiting for more than a year, let me clarify some simple information.
We do not want to take your money or your business. We have just fled from the oppression of the rulers, the horror of bullets and the voices of the defenders.
We are looking for a place where we can be safe in ourselves and the future of our children and our family...
Then you discover that nothing has changed but disappeared.
