Week of Solidarity with People Against Racism and Racial Discrimination – Fostering Inclusion and Celebrating Diversity in Our Community Spaces.
The Week of Solidarity with People Against Racism and Racial Discrimination serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of unity, respect, and the fight against discrimination. At our community centres, Alpha Centre and Alpha Land, we strive to foster a space where people on the move can feel welcomed, seen, and heard. Solidarity is not just a concept for us; it’s a practice we live every day through small yet meaningful gestures.
One of the ways we put solidarity into action is by celebrating cultural and religious events that are important to the people who come to our spaces. Taking time to celebrate events like Nowruz and Ramadan is a small gesture that can have a big impact. For instance, in preparation for Ramadan, we hosted workshops to create decorations that reflect the significance of this holy month. Our spaces are decorated with Ramadan-themed ornaments, helping to bring the atmosphere of home to our community members. Similarly, for Nowruz, the ancient Iranian/Persian New Year celebrated on the spring equinox, we organized art workshops where participants created ornaments representing Haft Sin table. This tradition features seven symbolic items, each beginning with the letter 'S' in Persian, embodying health, renewal, wisdom, love, and prosperity for the year ahead. In this way, people could engage in creative activities, connecting through art while sharing stories from their cultures.

Additionally, we're painting one of our windows at Alpha Centre with the names of the countries represented in our community, creating a vibrant collage that celebrates the diverse backgrounds of those who come to our spaces.
These activities make individuals feel respected and connected to their heritage, creating a sense of belonging that is so vital, especially in the context of displacement.
In addition to these decorations and activities, we encourage everyone to share their cultural music. It’s incredible to see how different sounds from around the world fill the space, creating an environment of celebration, respect, and togetherness. People play music from their countries, and it’s not just about entertainment, it’s a way of sharing a part of their identity and feeling valued.
Solidarity is a powerful force in our centres, and it’s truly inspiring to see how it unfolds each day. It’s not just about hosting events and activities; it’s about the spontaneous moments of connection. We witness how people from different countries, speaking different languages, can come together around a table to play board games, bond over shared experiences, and build friendships. These simple interactions, often overlooked, are the foundation of a community where respect and solidarity thrive. Each day, we see how people feed into this spirit, contributing to the strength of our community.
As we continue to navigate the challenges of displacement, cultural diversity, and social integration, we remain committed to creating spaces where people feel welcomed and at ease. In every small gesture, whether it’s celebrating a cultural tradition or simply sitting together to play a game, we try our best to reinforce the bonds of solidarity that are crucial in building a supportive and inclusive community.
Finally, here are some of the favorite songs from our community members, showcasing their countries, traditions, and cultures. Enjoy!
